I grew up in Miami, Florida to the sounds of music. With vivid memories such as these: lying in the grass on sweltering summer afternoons listening to the symphonies of cicadas, learning the chants of ocean waves singing the shorelines, the steady rhythm of Ravel’s “Bolero,” to which every Saturday my mother and I cleaned house, Frank Sinatra spinning on my audiophile dad’s record player, and later my regular late night forays to the Rancher Motel where I was creatively nourished by Miami’s jazz greats, I can’t remember a time when music was not my constant companion and guide.
At 13 I began studying classical voice at Barry University. At 18 I started my professional career as a singer songwriter in the coffee houses, hotels, and bars of Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. Two years later I became soloist and member of “The Early Music Consort” led by early music pioneer Arnold Grayson and remained active in the group 8 years. I studied jazz voice at the University of Miami, but restless to sing, withdrew in order to dedicate myself fully to writing and performing. After years of touring internationally, television appearances and six solo albums, I returned to school to study the creative process and creative writing. I earned my MFA in Vocal Performance from the California Institute of the Arts in 1995 then joined the faculty the following year as adjunct professor for Vocal Performance.
Some of the highlights of my career include: the cult status disco hit “Ain’t Nothin’ Gonna Keep Me from You,” produced by Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, Albhy Galuten, and Karl Richardson, two gold records: the first for my duet with my old friend KC from KC and the Sunshine Band “Yes, I’m Ready” and the second for my Japanese release single and album, “Overnight Success,” and a grammy nomination for “Best Gospel Vocal Performance, female” for my second contemporary Christian album “Voices in the Wind.”
I began teaching voice in 1992. My own “life song” unfolded in such a miraculous way that I felt spiritually impelled to teach and mentor others as my teachers and mentors guided me in the composing of my own life.
I lived in Hamburg, Germany between the years of 1997 and 2013. In conjunction with an active performing life, I taught and coached voice, both in conservatory settings and privately. I directed a number of choirs, from groups of organic farmers to seamen, and most meaningful for me: Gospelchor Blankenese from 2008 – 2013. A short biographical piece on my life and work with the choir was featured on the german television network NDR. I appeared in jazz clubs and festivals and gave concerts from folk, early music and contemporary classical music to gospel and jazz throughout northern Germany. In Sept 2013 I returned to the United States where I now reside in Valencia, Ca. During the summers I perform and teach in the beautiful city of Hamburg.
